Mahboob's medal bid ruined by injury

BAHRAIN'S Ali Hasan Mahboob saw his Olympic dream end in tears last night after he was injured midway through the men's 10,000m final and forced to retire.

The veteran was well-placed in the middle of the leading pack and seemed to be cruising through the tenth lap of 25 when he suddenly pulled off to the grass on the inside of the track.

The exact nature of the injury was not known last night but the outcome will come as a bitter blow for the 30-year-old, who also pulled out of the 5,000m at the last Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

Having finished 18th in the 10,000m final in Beijing, Mahboob had looked well on course to surpass that achievement last night but his injury will undoubtedly mark the end of his Olympic career.

Great Britain's Mo Farah went on to win the 10,000m gold medal to cap off a magnificent night on the track for the host nation.
