A tasty topic

It is quite amusing to open the paper and read about people's views on cuisine. I would have thought that food is a matter of taste - some people like certain types of food and some don't. There is no better or worse.

We are seriously confusing nationalist pride with our taste buds! Obviously the world we live in no longer faces any problems so now we are obsessed with palates.

Racism, sexism, terrorism, poverty, malnutrition, inequality, education and a host of other malaises no longer afflict our society, so we now turn our attention to what cuisine is the best.

People around the world find different food tasty - is it that hard to understand? Snail, frog legs and monkey brain are considered delicacies by some while others cringe at their mention. It does not mean that snails are more tasty than pav bhaji or that monkey brain is more delicious than nihari. It is simply a matter of taste.

Unfortunately being born with a palate does not mean being born with taste! My suggestion - keep an open mind - every cuisine is delicious. You just need to develop a taste for it.
