TOP seeds Kadri Rizk and Hassan Al Makharraq crashed out of the veteran men's doubles under-50 final at the GPIC Tennis Championship, being held at the Bahrain Tennis Club (BTC) courts in Juffair.
The Bahraini pair lost to compatriots Sayed Masood and Hussain Al Makharraq 3-6, 6-2, 8-10 in the semi-final, which was played for over one hour and 45 minutes.
Masood and Al Makharraq, the tournament's third seed who defeated Ed Tuando and Mar Cruz 6-3, 6-2 in their opening game, put on a brave show to secure the game and a berth in the final.
The victors will now play their final match, scheduled for today, against second seed pair of Mohammed Al Mosawi and his partner Abdulhussain Nashaba.
Al Mosawi and Nashaba produced another solid show to edge the tournament's No. four Mike Bernal and Sami Samaco 6-3, 6-3.
Al Mosawi and Al Nashaba, who edged Freddy Icao and Daniel Rudiera 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 in a well-contested game, were in top form as they took a significant step towards winning the category title.
Meanwhile, the first round of the men's doubles also took place yesterday with nine matches on the cards.
Bahrain national team rising player Ayman Jaffer combined forces with Filipino veteran Mohammed Junie to beat the tandem of Joonha Yu, the Korean ambassador to Bahrain, and compatriot Song Il 6-1, 6-2.
Jaffer and Junie will play in the second round, to be held today, against the tournament's third seed tandem and national team stars Yousef Qaed and Khalid Al Mosawi.
Ali Al Asfoor and Hussain Kadhim followed suit, beating Ahmed Ebrahim and Ali Ahmed 6-0, 6-0, setting up their second round clash with top seed Khalid Al Thawadi and Abdulrahman Shehab.
Bahrain's Hamad Al Faran and E. Ismail also went through with a walkover win over Canadian opponent J Gebran and R Boutagy. The victors will next face fifth seeds Kareem Redha and Hassan Reda.
Abdulrahman Al Thani and teammate Hasan Al Mutawa defeated the pairs of Yaqoub Yousif and Mahmood Ramadan 6-3, 6-2.
They will now play either eighth seeds Essam Abdula'al and Mohammed Sanad, or the pair of N Laknotia and M Parmar.
The pairs of Khalifa Rashdan/Rashid Al Obaidly and Johnny Bohol/R Respecio are due to clash today following respective wins over A Al Mahmood/E Wallen of UK (walkover) and R Hull/I Sammak of the US (6-1, 6-1).
Ali Fakhro and his partner Ibrahim Qaed were also winners, defeating Vimal Krishna and Venkatesh Kumar 6-1, 6-4.
The last two tandems through were Serwin Ramtersad/Jaron Halmons and Yousif Redha/Ahmed Redha, beating the pairs of Salman Hassan/Mosen Algosaibi (6-1, 6-1) and Hisham Al Alawi/Mazen Al Saleh (walkover), respectively.
