KUWAIT yesterday bagged double victory at the GCC Junior Tennis Championships, which reached an exciting finish at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town. The Kuwaiti juniors dominated the final day of the tournament, winning the under-18 singles and doubles finals in style.
In the under-18 singles decider, Nasser Al Obaidly defeated another Kuwaiti Mohammed Reda 6-4, 7-6 (4) to clinch the trophy.
Nasser secured his second title of the day, this time with partner Mohammed Abdulla who outplayed compatriots Mohammed Abdulreda and Abdulhameed Al Shatti 6-2, 6-0.
Two more finals were held later in the day as the UAE and Saudi Arabia shared honours in their respective categories.
Faisal Al Rabadi of Saudi Arabia edged Bahraini Ahmed Mohammed 7-6 (3), 7-5 in a marathon under-14 singles final.
The UAE pair of Fahad Al Janahi and Abdulla Al Ahli then teamed up to win the under-14 trophy, defeating the Kuwaiti tandem of Ali Al Haraz and Hussain Jamal 6-2, 6-0.
The finals were followed by the prize-giving ceremony, which was held under the patronage of BTF president Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.
Shaikh Ahmed, along with other BTF officials, presented trophies to the winners and runners-up in each competition.
Commenting after the ceremony, Shaikh Ahmed said he was impressed with the improved performance of the players during the tournament, which underlines the significance of this prestigious gathering.
The BTF chief said the federation will continue its efforts in a bid to further develop the level of this discipline on the national level, stressing that the federation has already discovered new talents that will form the future of tennis in the kingdom.
The five-day tournament got underway with promising tennis players from four GCC countries - Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, in the fray.
There were two age categories this year, namely the under-14 and under-18, with matches in both categories played in a knock-out format.
