THIEVES broke into a shopping mall yesterday and made off with an electronic payment kiosk.
Sources said four to five people broke open a gate at the rear entrance of Ramli Mall in A'ali at around 5.20am and tried to smash open a Citibank cash machine.
They reportedly managed to cut off its power supply and move the ATM but were unable to steal any money.
The thieves then turned their attention to an electronic payment kiosk, which they picked up and fled, said the sources.
The robbery had been meticulously planned and thieves spent a considerable amount of time inside the mall trying to break open the cash machine, they told the GDN.
Sources said the thieves failed because the electronic locks had jammed shut, prompting them to make off with the much lighter kiosk instead.
The Interior Ministry confirmed the incident.
The General Director of Central Governorate Police said investigators rushed to the scene shortly after hearing about the crime at 5.21am and the Public Prosecution had been notified.
He added an investigation was underway to identify the suspects.
Mall officials would only confirm a probe had been launched.
