Talents Team clinch maiden league victory

GENERAL Organisation for Youth and Sports' (Goys) Talents Team picked up their maiden victory in the second edition of the Women's Basketball League.

In the second round of matches, held at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam, the Talents defeated Al Najma 51-34 to shrug off their 37-38 defeat to Al Hidd Club in the tournament's opener.

The Talents dominated the game right from the start, handing Al Najma their second straight defeat after going down 30-50 to Ministry of Interior team last week.

In the 10-minute first quarter, the Murtada Mohammed-coached Talents team went ahead by 10 points after a commanding show.

The points margin rapidly increased as the match progressed. The Talents went into the break with a 23-8 lead, then widened their advantage to 18 points at the end of the third and penultimate quarter.

The fourth and final quarter was closely battled, but eventually the Talents team maintained their lead by a sufficient margin to secure their first win in the tournament.

Rising player Fatima Mohammed Abbas emerged the top scorer for the victors with 16 points, which was also the highest score in the match.

In another match, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland captured a hard-fought 35-28 win over Al Ahli Club.

Royal College had a solid start to the game, taking a 7-2 lead in the first quarter, which was followed by a 14-10 advantage at the interval.

In the third quarter, Royal College stretched their lead to 12 points, but a late comeback by Al Ahli Club, coached by Fadel Melad, helped his side reduce the deficit to seven points.

Sima Ali of Al Ahli Club was the top scorer in the game with 19 points, including two three-pointers, while the Royal College team's best player was Mumena Sharif who managed 14 points.
